Smoke detector radiation

The radiation at a smoke detector was determined by an AA experiment to be about three times background, 45 counts per minute versus 14. The geiger counter’s sensor has to be directly over the Americium 241 to detect that level. Even laying the instrument on top of the smoke detector does not result in a noticeable increase in CPM.
